Howard Tibbals Miniature Circus – Ringling Museum of Art - Norman A. Rubin

Off the beaten track sites were quite plentiful when I traveled with my wife Tala through the United States, especially when we drove through the State of Florida. Off course we visited the regular sites that were of interest to us on our tour through the States and enjoyed them very much. Then, lo and behold, when we drove through Sarasota we came across an interesting attraction off the beaten site - the miniature Ringling Bros. and Bailey Circus created by the master model builder and philanthropist Howard Tibbals at the John and Mable Museum at Art. There we found the circus miniature model complete with eight main tents, 152 wagons, 1,300 circus performers and workers, more that 800 animals and 59 wagon circus train that occupies 3,800 feet Tibbals Learning Center at the museum..

“Wow, the circus is coming to town” as we viewed the posters of the coming event, when I recollected the memories of my youth. I do remember the circus posters that were plastered on buildings, bulletin boards, and on fences throughout the town, which as a youngster I would join my friends in the excitement of the arrival of the circus. At the learning center there are interactive circus posters, a digital exhibition of more than 5,000 posters and a changing gallery of original circus posters. ‘Yahoo, I loved the circus and still do!” Also my wife expressed her delight as we viewed this model exhibition.

‘Here comes the circus,’ are the words to the many of the circus fans. Circus is a magic word that inspired us to enter a fantasy of exciting, varied colorful images – tight rope walkers walking the high ropes, elephants thundering around the rings, horses prancing to the call of their trainer, clowns in all forms of costume and makeup cavorting in their acts causing ripples of laughter of the seated audience. The call of the ringmaster, the brilliant lights, the three ring performances that calls in to a child in each one of us that delights our memories

The Ringling Museum of the American Circus, established in 1948, was the first museum to document and highlights the history of the circus. The mission of the Circus Museum was to make circus artifacts accessible to a diverse audience that actively engages the visitor and helps the visitor to understand the performances of the artists and performers who made a unique impact on the ever-changing face of the American Circus.

For us the tour of the Ringling Museum of Art was quite enjoyable and interesting. Both and my wife and I agreed that the museum was the most remarkable exhibition seen anywhere, combining art in all forms to together with a look at the circus world in miniature. Later we had a bit of a rest and comfort at the Treviso Restaurant at the museum where we partook of some of the culinary delights that suited our palate.

**Handicapped accessibility – wheel chairs are available at the Visitors Pavilion. There is a tram from building to building to pick up and drop off a wheel chair at each destination. Ramps are in the courtyard to provide access to the statuary.

1) The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, established in 1927 is located on a sixty-six acre estate on Sarasota Bay through the legacy of John Ringling (1866-1936) and his wife Mable (1875-1929). Within the museum complex there are twenty one galleries of European art, Asian art, as well as American paintings and contemporary art. The museum features the Tibbals Learning Center, as well as the Circus Museum with largest miniature circus. ‘http://www.ringling.org/’

2) It was the same John Ringling who made Sarasota synonymous with circus throughout America and the rest of the world when he move the winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. and Bailey from Bridgeport, Conn. to Sarasota in 1927. Since then through the years thousands of visitors came to the circus site.

Boxer Breed Profile

Friday, March 27th, 2009
David Beart asked:

The boxer is a dignified and yet playful dog. Often wary of strangers, they inspire incredible loyalty among those who have had one. This easy to maintain, smooth coated dog loves his people. He is highly trainable and wants to please, and like many active breeds is best kept busy to prevent problems.

The boxer is another German based breed. They are lively and can be high energy dogs. Each is uniquely and individual and although now not as popular as in the past, they hold a special spot in American history also.

Going back in history the breed traces to the 16th-17th centuries in Tibet. It is thought the Boxer traces to dogs referred to as the Bullenbeisser while other sources mention a dog called Bouldogue de Mida. They were used to hunt wild boar, and their ears were cropped to keep the pigs from grabbing the dog’s ears. A family pet when not pursuing this activity, they were bred with the early English Bulldog, creating the first Boxers in the early 1800s. They were once used for bullbaiting. Some of these dogs were all white, a color that is banned from conformation shows today and by the standard not an accepted color.

At the turn of the century they were brought to the US, having been established as a working and police breed. The AKC recognized the first Boxer champion in 1915 but it was 34 years later until the breed really gathered the country’s attention. For a time in the 1940s and ’50s dog shows were covered by sports magazines and others. Popular dogs were noted and followed and in the late 1940s Bang Away made a splash when selected as Best In Show at 2-1/2 months old. He won at Westminster and 121 Best In Show wins over six years. It is documented that at one show a questionable loss by the Boxer resulted in a riot.

Today by the standard these dogs are up to 23-25 inches with females slightly smaller. Balance is essential the the dog is presented as a well muscled athlete. They are fawn or brindle and can have white markings, provided not more than 1/3 of the coat is white.

The Boxer is an active dog both physically and mentally. Keeping them busy with games, regular exercise and play is essential. They’re nice dogs for families as well as single people. Some tend to be aggressive with smaller pets, especially cats, so it is worth putting special training into the puppy if you have other pets. They are intelligent dogs that love to learn. They can be somewhat independent thinking, and it is worth noting to balance insisting on obeying with picking your battles in training issues.

The Boxer is a beautiful, athletic dog with a great combination of gentleness yet the ability to rise to defend his family if need be. The unique way he uses is front feet when fighting (or playing!) gave the Boxer his name. This is a breed that can get 65-80 pounds, so it’s worth noting that training from early on is needed.

Health problems that can affect Boxers include hip dysplasia, aortic stenosis (a heart defect), Boxer cardiomyopathy, thyroid disorders, corneal dystrophy, demodectic mange (which is easily treated but indicates a weakness in the immune system), cancer, bloat, allergies and, in white Boxers, often deafness. Fortunately, many of these can be tested for and rule out genetic passing on of the defects. For those dogs that are affected, serious problems can result and it is best to know and deal with the health problems as soon as possible.

It is also worth noting that like many short nosed breeds, the structure of their head can lead to problems in high heat and humidity. For this reason particular attention should be paid to keeping the dogs cool and not exercising them when it is dangerously hot outside.

From a breeding standpoint a typical litter size is six puppies. Because of the health problems in the breed, health testing should always be done before breeding to insure you aren’t passing along traits that condemn the puppies to a bad (and short) life.

Boxers are still used for police K-9 work. They have the friendly nature, prey drive and power to effectively work in the sport of Schutzhund as well as for obedience, agility, or personal dogs. He’s been used as a war dog and a seeing-eye dog. They’ve been used as messengers and sentries, search and rescue and detection work. Some have been used for flyball competition and therapy dogs.

The Boxer has a tendency to love life - they will put all their energy into whatever they are doing. They can be incredibly persistant if they want something badly enough! They are affectionate and sometimes forget their manners and size when they get excited to see a friend.

Boxers with good care can live well into their teens. Grooming is minimal - occasional baths, trim toenails and general care. Being short haired an occasional brush down can help shine the coat and remove old hair and dander but the Boxer is for the most part a low-maintenance dog as far as grooming.

One unfortunate thing to consider is the advent of breed specific legislation in many areas. Even though it often doesn’t directly include the Boxer, many people with breeds that are affected have now taken to calling them “Boxer crosses”. The kick to that can come much later, as good Boxers have a tractable temperment but can be accused and grouped in with other dogs based on appearance. It’s worth making sure you have proof your dog is a *Boxer* depending on where you live and the local laws, which seem to change on a regular basis.

Famous owners reported to have had Boxers include Jodie Foster, Carroll O’Connor, Robin Williams, George Clooney, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Charlton Heston, Sylvester Stallone, Humphrey Bogart, Nat King Cole, Lauren Bacall and Shirley MacLaine.

In city popularity they are the dog of choice in Knoxville and second in DesMoines, Kansas City, Louisville and Omaha. They hold the third spot in Baltimore, Charlotte, Cleveland and Memphis and made the top five in a host of other cities. Nationally on the AKC list thay ranked sixth in 2007.

If you’re looking for a dog that can combine seriousness with a clown - active with a house dog personality - and gentleness with a willingness to protect his family whatever the odds, consider a Boxer. They are never dull and we could learn something from them in the zest for enjoying life! If you have a little room for a larger dog and an active lifestyle to keep them busy, consider a Boxer for your next pet.

Family Circus - Make Time For Family With An Internet Business

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009
Michelle Bery asked:

Sometimes, it seems like you don’t have a full 24 hours in a day. Between work, family, and sleep, there is no time for anything else. You never seem to have five minutes to relax, and on days when work requires overtime, you lose time with your family. In fact, it seems you never spend quality time with your children anymore. One way to get your life back under your control and manage time better is to start your own internet business. With an online business opportunity, you can decrease your work hours overall, as well as become more flexible and available for your family.

With a standard office job, you are required to drive to work and back. Whether you are a commuter or not, this is extra time that must be incorporated into your busy work day and more time taken away from family. Then, you may get stuck in the office, waiting for a conference call or a sales call that isn’t going to come in until an hour after you’ve normally left. To make matters worse, you find yourself sitting at your desk with nothing to do at several points during the day.

Take the same circumstances and apply them to an online business opportunity that you run from home. First of all, doing business online doesn’t require commuter time (or the stress of dealing with traffic). You don’t have to get into the office at a certain time and, though it is best to maintain a schedule, you can be flexible when you run your own online business. If your child needs a ride to school, there is no need to call the boss and make excuses for being late. Also, if there is an after-hours meeting that must be attended, you can still spend time with your family before the meeting, rather than wasting the overtime in the office.

Best of all, if you have slow periods throughout your business day, your online business allows you the freedom to achieve other goals. You will have more time to clean the house so that you can spend time with your children after school. If your children aren’t in school yet, you can take time out to play a game with them. After all, your computer can be within visible or audible distance no matter where you are in your house.

If you can’t seem to find time for that doctor’s appointment, or you have to cut into family time to buy groceries, an online business venture can solve your problems. You are your own boss, create your own hours, and can get errands run or things accomplished while you work. As long as you are diligent in making sure everything is running smoothly for your online business and that customers are satisfied, you will find a world of freedom in running an internet business that allows you to enjoy life, spend time with family and friends, and still provide the financial support system that your family requires.

What Do You Mean "what Was Roman Daily Life Like"?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Marcus Ruhl asked:

The Romans are alive and well… sipping espressos and nibbling pastries in the piazzas.

Roman daily life?

It’s quite funny if you do an English search for “Roman daily life” on your favourite search engine you will get results for: Roman chariot races, circus maximus, gladiators and the ancient Roman Colosseum. Now do the same search in Italian and you will have results like shopping for handbags or how to use the Metro or other public transport in Rome!

The point is that to the Italians “Romans” are the people living in Rome Italy right now! They are alive and well and if you ask an Italian what WAS Roman daily life like they will raise an eyebrow and ask you “What do you mean WAS?”, most likely their eyes will light up and they will exclaim “Aahh, gli Antichi Romani” – aahhh, you mean the Ancient Romans!

In fact not much has changed in the last two thousand years. There are still Roman chariot races (albeit informal) through the streets of Rome Italy, but the vehicles are more expensive, heavier and perhaps less reliable. There are roads and bridges but none last as long as they used to, even the masses of tourists is nothing new, tourists have been traveling long distances to get to Rome for thousands of years. We even thought we invented light weight concrete, but we only re-invented it when we discovered that the dome of the Roman Pantheon was built using light weight stones!

So it becomes abundantly clear that the gap of 2000 years between ancient Roman life and moldern daily life is not that much of a stretch..

And sometimes I wonder what the ancient Romans would think about the new Rome and “improvements” of the 21st century. Would they marvel at the warmth and  convenience of our new homes, considering that they already had plumbing, underfloor heating, and examples of double glazing have been found in Ostia Antica. Would they be impressed with our new sports and stadias that seat thousands of fans, when the ancient Roman Colosseum could seat up to 70 000 fans and they could also fill it with water and stage mock sea battles.

They would have to be impressed with our new “chariot races” where speedy thoroughbred race horses dazzle the masses of well dresses spectators?! But then again the Circus Maximus did hold 380 000 fans and entrance was free!

Hmmm, after the ancient Romans sniffed the air and heard the noise pollution of modern cities, and felt the hustle and bustle of life in modern Rome (and continued corruption in politics) and compared it to ancient Roman daily life with its average 100 festive days a year, I have an idea which version they preferred.

Britney Spears Brings Her ‘circus’ to Town

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
ShowTimeTickets.com asked:

To mark her 27th birthday, Britney Spears announced her 2009 tour, set to be her return to music. The 35-date North American & United Kingdom tour, aptly entitled, “The Circus Starring Britney Spears” will be the first tour for Spears in over four years.

With the exception of a few random performances and a short-lived attempt at a “comeback” in 2007, the singer has been relatively quiet when it comes to her career. But over the past few years, Spears’ personal life has been the focus of the media and public’s attention. With a marriage, divorce, birth of two children, rehab, custody battles and countless breakdowns and bizarre moments, people had nearly given up on the pop icon and continually referred to her story as a tragedy. Thankfully, with the help of her father, she got her feet back on the ground and headed back to the studio to write and record her latest album.

“Circus” is Spears’ sixth studio album, but certainly the most highly-anticipated of her career to date. Her kick off single “Womanizer” quickly became her first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 since her debut “…Baby One More Time” in 1998, and gained the status of largest opening-week downloads, with 286,000, according to Neilsen SoundScan.

With the whole world rooting for her, Spears will kick-off her “circus” with opening act The Pussycat Dolls in her home-state of Louisiana on March 3, 2009. With a string of Canadian dates intertwined and a 7-date stretch at the O2 Dome in London, UK, The Circus Starring Britney Spears is set to be a record-breaking revival tour!

GREGORY

Exhaust Headers and Air Intakes Via the Circus

Saturday, March 21st, 2009
Jimmy Plant asked:

I was walking down the road one ordinary day when suddenly, I saw her.

I was totally blown away. For the first time in my life I was in love. No, it wasn’t a girl, it was a car. And not just any car—the most perfect car in the world— a cherry red Mustang.

I had just turned 17 and was envious of all my other friends who had already been driving for a year. Whenever I had to get somewhere, I had to walk, and so it hurt my ego to suddenly have to dive into a bush to avoid being seen when one of my friends whizzed by.

One day as I passed the Mustang I wanted it more than ever. I had to get some quick cash – but how?

Luckily, the circus had just come to town and I passed several workmen who were clearing a large area to set up tents and exhibits. I was intrigued. I had always loved going to the circus when I was younger and was drawn to the colors, sounds and excitement of being a spectator.

So I walked inside the grounds and up to the nearest tent. Outside there was a wooden placard on which was written “Help Wanted – Glamorous Internship Position Available”. “Ah ha!” I thought to myself. This is surely fate at work. A few weeks on the job would put me well on the path to zooming down the highway in my dream car.

I walked into the tent and up to a desk. Behind a stack of ledgers was the manager who was busily counting piles of money. He ignored me, but when I cleared my throat a few times he looked up. “I’m here about an internship,” I said.

His face lit up and he rubbed his hands together. “Excellent,” he said. “We have a position available, and I think you might be perfect for it”

I had visions of stepping into the center of the ring, twirling my magnificent moustache and cracking my whip as the crowed roared. Or perhaps I could manage the freaks! I would feed the thousand pound man, or become the bearded lady’s stylist. It was the circus after all, a place of endless dreams.

The manager stood and regarded me critically.

“The position requires someone who laughs at danger!”

“I’m your man,” I replied calmly.

“Someone who can tame even the most fearsome beast, and can withstand what no ordinary mortal could bear to face!”

“No sweat,” I said with growing confidence.

The manager smiled.

“Excellent, you’re hired,” he said, “Report back here tomorrow at 4 AM.”

The next morning, I woke excitedly and ran all the way to work. But I was in for a surprise.

It turned out my job was to follow the elephants around with a bag and collect their massive droppings.

The manager tried to cheer me up. “This state has very strict laws on pollution,” he would say, “If we don’t keep the local community happy, we lose our license to perform. So in a way, you are single handedly responsible for the success of this entire enterprise.”

Needless to say, I grew disillusioned pretty quickly. The elephants grew to recognize me and my bag and they were always ready for a fresh deposit. Even the clowns were laughing at me.

The Inimitable Style Of Murano Glass Figurines

Monday, March 16th, 2009
Kevin Grinberg asked:

It is well known that glassmaking craft has been around for a very long time and this industry has expanded from window panes in ancient Roman times to chandeliers, jewelry, tableware, and even figurines. Glass figurines have been in fashion for years, but not many people realize that Murano glass figurines represent a perfect mix of artistic value, beautiful design, and quality.

Murano figurines are only made in one place in the world- Murano Island off the coast of Venice, Italy. The glass produced on this island is the most sought after glass in the world, and it boasts a rich heritage and centuries of history. In 1291, all of the glassmakers in Venice were forced out due to the risk of fires from their furnaces in largely wooden Venice. The government decree made them move to Murano Island, and since then for generations they have lived there and produced some of the greatest glass in the world.

Hand-made with passion and skill, using the instruments and techniques that haven’t changed much since antiquity, Murano figurines are beautiful and unique. They range in style from classic to modern and come in variety of sizes, making them perfect to accentuate your interior design and create a highlight in any room of your home or office.

If you would like to own a Murano figurine, there are many things to consider before you purchase one. First of all, if you are not buying your figurine physically in Murano, make sure you are dealing with a reputable seller who carries only authentic Murano glass. For that you need to know whether the seller or the maker of the figurines are members of Consortium Promovetro – the only Venetian Glass industry organization that promotes authenticity of Murano glass against the multitude of counterfeits and fakes available in the world today. Quoting from the Consortium’s website, “it represents over 70 craft and industrial businesses on Murano and in Venice. Since its foundation, Promovetro has worked hard to promote the image of Murano\’s artistic glass with the declared intent of conserving, safeguarding and defending Murano\’s thousand year old art of glass, and at the same time to promote, develop and assist in properly marketing this important cultural heritage in the world.”

Secondly, you need to decide on a form, a size and a style that would work best for you. Each Murano glass figurine is hand-made, so there are a many styles, colors, and shapes available. There are animal figures, birds, flowers, clowns, orchestra musicians, gondoliers, and many other forms. All the famous Murano techniques can be used for creating figurines, ranging from Millefiori to Fenicio to Avventurina. Once you determine the best possible option to complement your home décor or to add to your figurine collection, go ahead and search among Murano glass makers and importers for that particular piece- chances are, even if you can’t visit Murano and order it directly from the glassmaker there, someone has it available in their store or on their website.

Last but not least, you need to consider where you are going to put it. A genuine Murano glass figurine is not just a decoration, but a stylish well-designed hand-crafted treasure with rich history. It is a reminder of the beauty and romance of Venice that will create a special atmosphere in your home or office. Putting it on an open shelf or table where it can capture and reflect light will make it a highlight of the room, but keep in mind that it needs to work well with the rest of your décor and color scheme.
